Vacuum Coffee Maker

A vacuum coffee maker is one of the best ways to make a perfect cup of delicious coffee. Vacuum coffee makers have been around since the 1800s when they were invented by the German company Loeff.

They fell out of favor in North America in the 1960s when the electric drip brew coffee makers became available, but they have remained popular in Europe and Japan. In Europe, the Bodum Santos vacuum coffee maker is found in a majority of Scandinavian homes. In Japan, the Yama coffee makers are very popular. The vacuum brew coffee maker is making a comeback in North America, particularly among coffee aficionados.

Vacuum coffee makers brew coffee based on the vacuum process that is caused by the heating and subsequent cooling down of water. The coffee makers have four main parts.

There are two pots that sit one on top of the other. In the top pot you place your freshly ground coffee and in the bottom pot you place the water. The two pots are connected by a siphon tube and sealed together with a rubber gasket or other sealant.

To brew the coffee you place the bottom pot with the water on a heat source. Vacuum coffee makers come in stove top and table top models. There is also the electric vacuum coffee maker and glass vacuum coffee maker.  With a stove top model you place the bottom pot directly on the burner on your stove. With a table top model the pot with the water is heated on a butane burner or alcohol-based burner.

Once the water is about to come to a boil in the lower pot, you place the top pot containing the coffee grounds on top of the bottom pot and make sure they are sealed together. As the water continues to heat, water vapor is created by the vacuum inside the bottom pot. Water is forced up the siphon tube to the top pot where the water meets the coffee grounds. The water and coffee are blended and brewed at a temperature optimal for the coffee brewing process. The amount of time you allow this part of the brewing process to occur depends on how strong you want your coffee.

The next step in the process is to remove the vacuum coffee maker from the heat source. As the water cools in the top pot the vacuum pressure is released and the coffee flows back down in the bottom pot. You now have a delicious pot of rich, smooth coffee to serve and enjoy.
